Math, Math and MATH.  I absolutely love math.   Some students and even parents are hesitant to learn math because it might be difficult for them or new to them.  We try to teach math in an encouraging way where students will feel successful.  If you're a parent whose child is having difficulty learning math (or maybe you're even having trouble with some of the new common core math!) don't hesitate to reach out to me at mbattaglia@glencove.k12.ny.us for help.

Addition

Addition is a core concept in 2nd grade that students must know.  Children should have single digit facts that add up to 20 memorized by the end of the year.  Practicing with flash cards is a great way to help children but your child may really love some of these websites as well.  Check them out!

Subtraction

Subtraction is a more difficult concept for 2nd graders to memorize.  Some students will put the greater number in their head and count backwards, others will put the smaller number in their head and count up to find the difference.  Both strategies are good and should be practiced often.  Here are a couple of fun websites to help your children keep their subtraction skills sharp.

Telling Time

Telling time is a crucial concept for 2nd graders to learn and not just being able to read the time on a phone!  Children need to learn how to tell time to the hour, 1/2 hour and 5 minute intervals using analog clocks.  Check some of these websites out for extra practice!

Problem Solving

Problem solving is an important skill that should be learned in Kindergarten.  Students should be able to read a math word problem, choose if they have to add or subtract and draw a picture to help them solve an equation.

Money

Money is all around us.  Dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies are used every day!!  It's essential that children learn how to count money.  Below are some websites to help children practice their skills with money.
